Hello... I'm Tom Willis for The Berry Patch, stand by for the picking report...
Praise the Lord... The Lord
gave us ample rain this Spring for the first time in 5 years. However, He also
sent a message to the global warming folks, two days in April were 10 degrees
lower than any since records have been kept (over 100 years). It got down to
16 degrees here and over a large portion of the country, including many southern
states. We thought it had killed every blueberry blossom at The Berry Patch,
but perhaps it killed only 90% of the 2007 Blueberries and some of the Summer
Blackberries. However, the Lord willing, the 2007 Blackberry Crop will
still be over 3-times last year's crop.
And, we'll supplement our own bluebery crop with berries bought from
our friends in Texas, Arkansas and Michigan. Arkansas was hurt so bad
that we are able to buy an entire picking off one large grower. Texas and Michigan
largely (not entirely) escaped the freeze damage.
"The Lord Giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord."
Rather than crying (too long), we headed to Michigan to pick up 5600 blueberry
plants. These are to plant & sell, the freeze did not kill any plants, we
are simply expanding our acreage of blueberries. With these and the ones we
planted 3 years ago, we hope to have 7 more acres of blueberries.
Also, the boys are presently erecting a new tower, with two exciting tunnel-slides,
in the Fun Center.
The Lord willing, the Fun Center will be bigger and better
than ever this year, we will import fresh blueberries in July
and August, the day they are picked we'll bring them back from Michigan, so
we will still be able to fill all your blueberry needs. Due to the crop setback,
and the 2000 plants we added two years ago, we anticipate a very large
blueberry crop next year (2008) and the largest ever blackberry crop.
Incidentally, the Fall blackberry crop for 2007 looks quite good.
Now in our 2nd Fall Blackberry year, there should be a pretty good Fall Blackberry
crop in 2007.
Blueberry Plants
Our
plants are too small now. We recommend you wait until Fall to buy them!
