Hello... I'm Tom Willis for The Berry Patch, stand by for the picking report.

Following is a general report for the season. For more current details, see the Table and above it.

Blueberry Report: Blueberries have been great in 2008. We started picking new blueberry fields for the first time this year, and they are beautiful.
Like last year, it was one of the coldest Springs on record. There were no hard freezes after bloom this year, but the long cold April did reduce the crop somewhat.. We opened June 17th, over two weeks later than recent years. The bushes can ripen the smaller crop faster, tending to shorten the season. But, strangely, the late varieties were not hurt, so the blueberry season should last well into August.

One Warning: Because of the number of pickers, it seems that picking can start "good" but we are picked out during the day, usually by noon. Only a prophet could determine this in advance, but, the Lord willing, there will be blueberries well into August.

Blackberry Report - There is very good news for Blackberry lovers. The 2008 Blackberry crop is at least 20 times as large as we have ever had, and they are ready. Every variety looks good. This time of year, they ripen quickly, but there are more blackberry lovers than we knew. They have kept us picked out by about noon every day. They should last through September.
